RYA First Aid
If you are every unfortunate enough to experience a medical emergency on board, a little First Aid knowledge will give you the confidence to take immediate action. This can and does save lives!
It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

Syllabus
- The importance of preventing cross infection
- The need for recording and/or reporting incidents and accidents
- Assessing a scenario and circumstances to ensure they act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.
- Perform CPR to current protocols incorporating the use of AED
- Understands the differential for drowning
Understand the importance of the recovery position and the need to modify it for small spaces
- Administer first aid to those who are unconscious
- Identify types of external bleeding
- Control bleeding
- Learn to use appropriate dressings, bandages and other first aid equipment
- Including improvised dressings and bandages
- Understand the term shock
- how to recognise
- how treat it.
- Understand Cold Shock
- Recognise and understands the treatment for hypothermia following immersion and/or exposure.
- Recognise the signs of a reduced level of response, with particular reference to serious head injuries.
Learn to administer suitable first aid for:
- Breathing difficulties
- Choking
- Chest pain
- Seasickness
- Diabetic emergency
- Anaphylaxis
- Hyperthermia
- Fractures
- Seizures
- Burns, including scalds, chemical and electrical
- Minor injuries including small cuts, grazes, bruises and small splinters
- Can choose suitable first aid equipment
Course Info
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded your RYA First Aid certificate at the end of the day by your Instructor.

One full day of training
No prior experience is required.
The recovery position in a confined space, CPR, including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia for immersion and/or exposure, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF, helicopter rescue.
To demonstrate a good understanding and knowledge of first aid
