VHF Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC)

What the course delivers

Using our training partners, Ardent Training, this online course trains skippers for the Short Range Certificate, the qualification required by law if you operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

This course is for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio.

A VHF radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures, especially if you are the boat’s captain.

Course Features

The course is delivered in the classroom at out training centre.

We will introduce the students to the concepts of radio communication and common examples of DSC radio equipment.

Course Syllabus

This comprehensive course builds on the theory fundamentals to prepare you for your Yachtmaster qualification. The key topics covered include:

• The basics of radio communication
• Propagation and range of VHF frequencies 
• The usage of VHF frequencies in the maritime mobile service
• Distress, urgency and safety communications
• Channel plan for VHF, including allocations for the GMDSS
• Components and controls of the radio equipment
• Distress and safety channels – National channels for small craft safety
• Common Calling channels
• Maritime VHF antennas
• DSC controls:
  • Channel 70 instant alert selector.             
  • DSC data entry and display.
  • Updating vessel position.
  • Entering pre-set message.
  • Entering traffic information.
  • Reviewing received messages.
  • DSC watchkeeplng functions and controls.
• Sea Areas and access to GMDSS facilities
•  The role of Rescue Coordination Centres
•  Organisation of search and rescue services
• Voice procedure practise – simulated and live
