About This Course

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical is an advanced course for skippers who want to command a motor cruiser safely on coastal and offshore passages, including at night. Over five days from Puerto Sotogrande, you will build on your existing experience with challenging real-world passages through the Strait of Gibraltar and along the Costa del Sol.

Our location gives you access to genuinely varied conditions, with tidal streams through the Strait, Atlantic swell, and Mediterranean passages all available within a short passage of the marina. There are few better places in Europe to develop real offshore competence.

Before You Arrive

GPS co-ordinates: 36º 17'24'' N, 005º 16'10'' W.

Training takes place in and around Puerto Sotogrande Marina, with visits to other ports before returning to base each day.

Training days normally run 09:30 to around 17:00 after the first meeting, with one early morning or late night navigation session.

Bring a passport-sized photograph, passport/ID, sun protection, sunglasses, hat, non-marking footwear and windproof/showerproof layers.

Wet weather gear is not supplied.

Yachtmaster Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore examiner fees are paid directly to the RYA and are not included in the course price.

Prerequisites

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory or equivalent, and substantial sea miles including night passages. RYA Day Skipper certificate strongly recommended.
